The desktop tool is a one-off licence quoted on the size of the organisation. The hosted builder, which your own customers use in a browser, is an ongoing arrangement quoted separately, and costs less when it is built alongside a website.
What it does
- Nests many designs onto a fixed-width film roll and solves for the shortest sheet length that fits them.
- Exports print-ready at 300dpi.
- One packing and export engine shared by the desktop application and the hosted builder, so both produce the same sheet.
- Hosted variant lets your own customers build their own sheets and send them to you.
Limits worth knowing
- Hosted exports are purged after 90 days to keep storage costs predictable.
- Above roughly 200 sheets a month the hosted builder is re-quoted rather than bundled as unlimited.
- The hosted builder handles your customers’ artwork, which makes it personal data with Scorpion as processor. A data processing agreement has to be in place before it goes live.
Design decisions
How it is built
The decisions below cost more to build than the obvious alternative. They are the reason the tool holds up in use, so they are worth reading before you compare it against something cheaper.
The same engine on both sides
The desktop tool and the hosted builder are not two implementations of the same idea. They share one packing and export engine, so a sheet a customer builds in the browser and a sheet you build at the counter come out identical.
